It was an okay story, I guess I expected more of an epic ending。 When the New Avengers vol 1 ended, it got me all teared up。 So this was kind of a let down。 All in all not a bad story though。

Look, we're so far into the Marvel universe and the work of Bendis that you now know what top expect - top quality illustrations, humour, and (all being well) a cracking story。 Well, here, in volume 5 of this particular part of the Avengers universe, two out of three isn't bad。 All the main components are here, but this is another one of those books that feels like it's just cruising in neutral waiting for the next bigger thing to rock up。 Starting with an attack on the Avengers from a bunch of Look, we're so far into the Marvel universe and the work of Bendis that you now know what top expect - top quality illustrations, humour, and (all being well) a cracking story。 Well, here, in volume 5 of this particular part of the Avengers universe, two out of three isn't bad。 All the main components are here, but this is another one of those books that feels like it's just cruising in neutral waiting for the next bigger thing to rock up。 Starting with an attack on the Avengers from a bunch of disaffected rejects, we find ourselves in a mini-world and Hank Pym at the forefront。Things happen, an old friend returns, help comes from unexpected quarters, yadda yadda, etc etc。 It's all fine and good, but it doesn't ever get out of second gear。 。。。more

An okay end to an uneven run。 This and the final New Avengers volume are the last Avengers books Bendis wrote。 And though his run was great at times, the final issues are not as good as the ending of his original New Avengers run。

Felt like an unfinished follow up to the X-men storyline。

If I'm being honest with myself this is a 2。5 more than it is a 3, but I try not to have decimals in my scores。This is the end of Bendis on Avengers。 He wrote the main Avenger titles from 2004 - 2012 before Hickman took over for his legendary run。 And I read a lot of it, a large large portion of it at least。 He says 232 comics together throughout all the titles and I haven't read all 232 but it's quite the achievement。This volume is about two things, two people。 Janet Van Dyme and Wonder Man。The If I'm being honest with myself this is a 2。5 more than it is a 3, but I try not to have decimals in my scores。This is the end of Bendis on Avengers。 He wrote the main Avenger titles from 2004 - 2012 before Hickman took over for his legendary run。 And I read a lot of it, a large large portion of it at least。 He says 232 comics together throughout all the titles and I haven't read all 232 but it's quite the achievement。This volume is about two things, two people。 Janet Van Dyme and Wonder Man。The main story is about going to a smaller dimension that exists within our dimension in the same space but at a microscopic level。 There is also a half baked plot about Wonder Man thinking the Avengers are bad and his subsequent attack on their home which is confusing to say the least because that took place in the annuals before the last couple issues of Avengers。The art is fine and does it's job, even being very pretty during the fight scenes。 As a sort of conclusion to Bendis writing Avengers? It doesn't really feel like an end and that hurts it。 But at the very least I enjoyed them going to get Janet again。3 stars, lukewarm。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 As far as Avengers stories go, this is okay。 As far as a series finale goes。。。 it's pretty bland。 That last fight wasn't as big as you'd want it to be but it was fine。 Again, I'm always relieved when the Avengers don't fight each other so, at least this book has that going for it。I liked seeing Jan return though a part of me always cringes when I have to watch her embrace Hank Pym。 I'm never going to be okay with that。Anyway, this was just the Avengers coming to the microverse to rescue her and As far as Avengers stories go, this is okay。 As far as a series finale goes。。。 it's pretty bland。 That last fight wasn't as big as you'd want it to be but it was fine。 Again, I'm always relieved when the Avengers don't fight each other so, at least this book has that going for it。I liked seeing Jan return though a part of me always cringes when I have to watch her embrace Hank Pym。 I'm never going to be okay with that。Anyway, this was just the Avengers coming to the microverse to rescue her and that was nice to see。 Nothing super special but it was okay。Also, that annual where Simon Williams wants to shut the Avengers down because they're running around unchecked。 Yo, Bendis, that came several years too late。 The time for that would have been during the actual Civil War arc。 What a waste of what could have been interesting: Bill Foster's relative trying to get revenge for Goliath's death。 。。。more

The original team goes to get Jan from the microverse and it is the BEST ARC EVER and I'm not just saying that because they have to fight a centaur in plate armor。 Okay, that helps。 My favorite moment has to be Jan kissing all of them because she's so happy to see them。 Even Tony's faceplate。 I love Jan van Dyne。Even the presence of Wonder Man cannot ruin this for me。What a great ending。 The original team goes to get Jan from the microverse and it is the BEST ARC EVER and I'm not just saying that because they have to fight a centaur in plate armor。 Okay, that helps。 My favorite moment has to be Jan kissing all of them because she's so happy to see them。 Even Tony's faceplate。 I love Jan van Dyne。Even the presence of Wonder Man cannot ruin this for me。What a great ending。 。。。more

Brian Michael Bendis ends his Avengers run with a really good story about the impact the Avengers have on the world。 Do their good deeds outweigh the negative consequences? I wish Simon's convictions were longer lasting as he could have had a very interesting character development angle that could have been long lasting but I assume Bendis wanted to tell the complete story。 The return of an Avenger here isn't that surprising but was fun to see。 The art was phenomenal。 Overall, a very good Avenge Brian Michael Bendis ends his Avengers run with a really good story about the impact the Avengers have on the world。 Do their good deeds outweigh the negative consequences? I've always been meh on Wonder Man because it didn't seem like he got much storyline or wasn't very interesting。 This book was great because I felt like it exploded his character in a way that was more interesting to me。 It was also a good way to tie together all of Bendis's Avengers books。 I've always been meh on Wonder Man because it didn't seem like he got much storyline or wasn't very interesting。 This book was great because I felt like it exploded his character in a way that was more interesting to me。 It was also a good way to tie together all of Bendis's Avengers books。 。。。more

The first thing that Brian Michael Bendis did when he took over The Avengers was to destroy the team。 Then he spent the next 8 years writing over 200 comics under various titles building them back up into one of the cornerstones of the Marvel Universe。 (The movies might have helped him a little with that。) At the end of his time on the book Bendis takes us back to the beginning by taking care of some old business left over from Disassembled。There are two major stories with former Avenger Simon W The first thing that Brian Michael Bendis did when he took over The Avengers was to destroy the team。 Then he spent the next 8 years writing over 200 comics under various titles building them back up into one of the cornerstones of the Marvel Universe。 (The movies might have helped him a little with that。) At the end of his time on the book Bendis takes us back to the beginning by taking care of some old business left over from Disassembled。There are two major stories with former Avenger Simon Williams a/k/a Wonder Man lambasting the team publically with claims that they do far more harm than good what with the accidently making evil robot masterminds and hanging out with genocidal mutants and various other potentially world ending events。 Simon escalates from a public relations campaign to an actual attack。 In the second story the team gets a distress call from an unidentified Avenger in very odd place。There’s nothing super fantastic about this collection, but it was a relief to just read an Avengers book where the team is just doing normal superhero stuff rather than dealing with ginormous universe threatening crossovers。 Bendis isn’t my favorite comics writer, but I do find him entertaining when he’s been able to just do a fairly straightforward story, and this is a fun example of that with his usual banter for dialogue mixed with some fairly serious moments。 。。。more

The comings and goings of Simon Williams seem a little odd。 Possibly it's explained in more detail in some other books but judging by this one his making amends seem a panicky way for Bendis to tie the loose ends before leaving the title。 Otherwise a solid Avengers story。 The comings and goings of Simon Williams seem a little odd。 Possibly it's explained in more detail in some other books but judging by this one his making amends seem a panicky way for Bendis to tie the loose ends before leaving the title。 Otherwise a solid Avengers story。 。。。more

In a crossover with the New Avengers Annual, the simmering Wonder Man subplot came to a head。 Angry that the Avengers had re-started once more, Wonder Man formed the Revengers, composed of quasi-heroes with various ties to the Avengers。 The Revengers ambushed Avengers Mansion and blindsided the New Avengers, leaving them in disarray。 While the main Avengers responded to the attack on the mansion, the Revengers attacked Avengers Tower, then staged a media event where Wonder Man began to divulge A In a crossover with the New Avengers Annual, the simmering Wonder Man subplot came to a head。 Angry that the Avengers had re-started once more, Wonder Man formed the Revengers, composed of quasi-heroes with various ties to the Avengers。 The Revengers ambushed Avengers Mansion and blindsided the New Avengers, leaving them in disarray。 While the main Avengers responded to the attack on the mansion, the Revengers attacked Avengers Tower, then staged a media event where Wonder Man began to divulge Avengers secrets。 The Avengers subdued the Revengers and Wonder Man showed signs of mental strain before apparently fading from existence。Wonder Man popped up months later, remorseful and pleading an emotional breakdown。 This, just as the Avengers received an emergency signal from the spot where Wasp had apparently died during Secret Invasion。 Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Giant-Man entered the Microverse, where they reunited with a very much alive Wasp, before the local warlord waylaid the heroes。 The Founders line-up, reunited for the first time in years, pooled resources to strike back at the warlord。 Wonder Man’s arrival gave them the opening they needed back to their dimension。 Though the warlord briefly followed, the gathered Avengers made short work of him。 This volume of Avengers ended with a welcome home party for Wasp, while Cap and Iron Man plotted the team’s future。For a writer often accused of ignoring team history, Brian Michael Bendis couldn’t have picked a more classic approach to end his long run leading the Avengers franchise。 Spotlighting the Founders and bringing Wasp back onto the board were a nice homage to the team’s long history。 The classic rhythms were all there, the plot was a sturdy adventure that gave each character plenty of room to shine and there was a certain joy that suffused the whole story。 Even when the plot took a dark turn or two, there was a feeling of hopefulness that was classic Avengers。 It was almost like Bendis had decided to mostly put the toys back where he’d found them on his way out the door。 The Revengers story, while an interesting idea, didn’t quite work。 Mostly because Wonder Man’s motivations in opposing the return of the team never really made sense。 Wonder Man’s ambivalence about the Avengers always centered on his own role with the team and whether or not he felt worthy to serve or was being drawn in another direction。 The motivations for the other Revengers to join him felt even less convincing for the most part。 Bendis basically deciding to call a Mulligan and chalk it up to an emotional breakdown in the final arc was for the best。If the Revengers story didn’t quite work narratively, it featured some absolutely stunning Gabriele Dell’Otto art。 He contrasted an almost hazy, dreamlike quality against the propulsive action of the story to strong effect and crafted some impressive visuals。 The panel featuring a mid-air collision between Wonder Man and Ms。 Marvel especially stood out。 In the regular arc, Mike Mayhew (in the “regular world” sections) and Brandon Peterson (in the Microverse parts) split most of the art duties, each doing his usual strong, distinctive work。 As a bonus, Terry & Rachel Dodson, Mike Deodato, Walter Simonson, Leinil Yu, Jim Cheung and Olivier Coipel all contributed to the finale, adding a bit of extra interest。 Along with its sister arc in New Avengers, this was a strong finish for Bendis, a story any Avengers fan can enjoy that set up the next chapter in the franchise’s history quite effectively。A version of this review originally appeared on www。thunderalleybcp。com 。。。more

Bendis tries his best to leave on a positive note, bringing back the Wasp, thought dead since the Invasion event, but since it Invasion was so badly done at the end so that you couldn't even tell she supposedly died, and none of the characters really seemed to care all that much afterwards, this was anti-climactic at best。 Much more interesting was the Wonder Man plot, where he actively sought the end of the Avengers, as he saw them as a greater threat than a protective force。 It degenerated int Bendis tries his best to leave on a positive note, bringing back the Wasp, thought dead since the Invasion event, but since it Invasion was so badly done at the end so that you couldn't even tell she supposedly died, and none of the characters really seemed to care all that much afterwards, this was anti-climactic at best。 Much more interesting was the Wonder Man plot, where he actively sought the end of the Avengers, as he saw them as a greater threat than a protective force。 It degenerated into a typical superbrawl with wannabe heroes taking down the Avengers briefly, but it asked hard questions and implied a much greater plot that is never really explored。 How is Wonder Man back? How does he do his disappearing act。。。 is he crazy or working at a higher level? None if it really comes to any kind of fruition。 Felt like Bendis had a really intricate story that editorial nixed because this was at the height of Avengers mania with the first movie and they wanted a more straight forward book。 Generally bleh。 。。。more

OK, so it wasn't the best story arc of his entire 232 issue run on Avengers, but reading the Farewell Essay at the back of the book it's damn hard not to get sentimental about the closing chapter of this fantastic series。 This series defined the Avengers for a new generation (with a little help from Mark Millar's Ultimates), and it's unlikely Marvel's bold Cinematic Universe experiment culminating in The Avengers film would have happened if Bendis hadn't been producing such excellent comics at t OK, so it wasn't the best story arc of his entire 232 issue run on Avengers, but reading the Farewell Essay at the back of the book it's damn hard not to get sentimental about the closing chapter of this fantastic series。 This series defined the Avengers for a new generation (with a little help from Mark Millar's Ultimates), and it's unlikely Marvel's bold Cinematic Universe experiment culminating in The Avengers film would have happened if Bendis hadn't been producing such excellent comics at the time。 It's definitely a series I'm proud to have on my shelf, and one I look forward to revisiting over the years。 。。。more

I found this a somewhat meh end to Bendis' Avengers run 。。。 but I don't think he's ever been as good writing the big guns as his street-level New Avengers。 He seems to run into particular problems when he focuses on the triad of Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man 。。。 and that's exactly what happens here。In any case, the annuals story line of a crazy Wonder Man was a somewhat dull fight whose only redeeming feature was the fact that it has some clever ties to Bendis' first work on Avengers Dissa I found this a somewhat meh end to Bendis' Avengers run 。。。 but I don't think he's ever been as good writing the big guns as his street-level New Avengers。 He seems to run into particular problems when he focuses on the triad of Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man 。。。 and that's exactly what happens here。In any case, the annuals story line of a crazy Wonder Man was a somewhat dull fight whose only redeeming feature was the fact that it has some clever ties to Bendis' first work on Avengers Dissasembled。The final storyline about the Microverse similarly descended into a dull fight, this time against a no-name villain。 Worst, most of the team is sidelined。So, it was OK, but not great, and I'm a bit confused because I thought Wasp's body was in Overspace or something, but maybe that turned out to be a fake or something 。。。Looking forward to new authors writing this team! 。。。more

A very strong way to end Brian Bendis' run on the Avengers。 It's had its ups and downs, but both this and the New Avengers final volumes send the books out on a high。 The first half of this volume deals with Wonder Man's attack on the Avengers, and the artwork alone sells these to me because Dell'Otto's pencils are gorgeous。 It's a good story too though, which is nice, and the aftermath is felt through the second half of the volume as End Times takes the Avengers into the Microverse to try and t A very strong way to end Brian Bendis' run on the Avengers。 It's had its ups and downs, but both this and the New Avengers final volumes send the books out on a high。 The first half of this volume deals with Wonder Man's attack on the Avengers, and the artwork alone sells these to me because Dell'Otto's pencils are gorgeous。 It's a good story too though, which is nice, and the aftermath is felt through the second half of the volume as End Times takes the Avengers into the Microverse to try and track down one of their missing comrades。 It does feel like Bendis is hitting the reset button on the Avengers by restoring everyone he murdered through his tenure, but it's a fun story that shows what happens when the Avengers look out for each other, and it ends with a nice segue into Jonathan Hickman's Avengers series。 The artwork is mostly excellent, but having different artists on each issue is irritating, even if they are all good artists。The volume ends with a farewell letter from Bendis which is heartfelt and nice to be included。 Overall, this is a strong end to what has been a memorable (if not always excellent) 8-9 year run on these titles。 。。。more

And so Bendis ends his decade-long run on the various Avengers titles not with a bang, but a whimper。 This story, which I finished a couple of days ago, is so forgettable that I had to go back and reread part of it to remind myself what even happened in it。 The writing this time around is pretty sloppy, and feels like Bendis was more than ready to give up this series。 It makes me wish he'd stopped when he completed his original New Avengers run, which was one of the best Avengers runs of all tim And so Bendis ends his decade-long run on the various Avengers titles not with a bang, but a whimper。 This story, which I finished a couple of days ago, is so forgettable that I had to go back and reread part of it to remind myself what even happened in it。 The writing this time around is pretty sloppy, and feels like Bendis was more than ready to give up this series。 It makes me wish he'd stopped when he completed his original New Avengers run, which was one of the best Avengers runs of all time。 Instead, I assume Marvel asked him to keep going even though he tied up all his loose ends, and we end up with this haphazard extension that had no ultimate goal and none of the intricate plotting of his original run。In this volume, as a climax, we get a random story about Wonder Man (who I can only assume no one actually cares about) turning on the Avengers, and the return of (view spoiler)[the Wasp (hide spoiler)], another character I assume no one cares about。 I sure didn't, and treating these revelations as if they were climactic felt borderline comedic。Do yourself a favor: skip this and just read Bendis's original New Avengers。 It's fantastic, ties in to a bunch of major Marvel crossovers that were actually pretty good, and doesn't peter out。 。。。more
